Nicole’s Philosophy on Mindfulness to Combat Burnout

“My specialty is in yoga for stress management, anxiety, and overall mental health and wellness,” Nicole said. “My favorite self-care quote is, ‘You, yourself, as much as anyone in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.’ Some say this is a quote from Buddha.”

Connection Between Burnout and Mindfulness

“When practicing mindfulness, you become much more aware of your inner state,” Nicole said. “By cultivating a greater state of awareness, you have greater access to the signs and symptoms of burnout before it occurs. Mindfulness can be a useful tool to mitigate burnout and to assist in recovery from it.”

Nicole’s Mindfulness Tips to Combat Burnout

Practice the STOP meditation.

  • S: Stop whatever you are doing for a few moments.
  • T: Take a few deep belly breaths.
  • O: Observe how you are feeling.
  • P: Proceed with greater present moment awareness.

Practice square breath. This is used by the military to stay calm and focused!

  • Inhale for a count of four.
  • Pause and hold your breath for a count of four.
  • Exhale for a count of four.
  • Pause and hold your breath for a count of four.
  • Continue with several more rounds until you feel calmer and more focused.

Engage your five senses. When you’re feeling anxious and overwhelmed, it can be helpful to use a mindfulness technique that utilizes our five senses.

  • Look around at five things or objects you can see.
  • Find four things to touch, such as your clothes against your skin, a pencil, etc.
  • Listen for three sounds that you can hear, close by or off in the distance.
  • Try to find two things that you can smell around you.
  • Notice any sense of taste in your mouth or on your tongue. Coffee? Leftover toothpaste?
